There are specific things to consider when looking for young adult addiction treatment services. This is true whether the person themselves are looking, or another person is looking for them. The considerations are specific for them, in addition to the normal factors for older persons. All things must be thoroughly considered to get the best care.

Type Of Treatment

One consideration is to decide whether inpatient or outpatient is the best choice. You will need to consider the severity of the problems, how much support is available, how consistent the patient will be, and the amount of funding or insurance available. Regardless of who is making the decision these factors should all be considered in detail.

Factors

The support system and family functionality are one of the most important considerations. If there is not a strong support system, or if the family is dysfunctional, inpatient care may be what is needed. However, with a strong support system and/or counselors, outpatient services might be best. Whichever is sought, the person much be committed to following the care plan.

Treatment Styles

With the care for the younger person, there are several styles of treatment facilities. There are those that are similar to a boarding school, where the person attends school and receives psychiatric and addiction treatment as well. There are those that are outdoor treatment, or wilderness style treatment programs. These re physically rigorous, using physical fitness as a treatment style. There are those that are more like a spa, or luxury hotel. Some are more like a psychiatric hospital, with strict regulations and medical management.

Future

Any or all of these can be effective. It depends in part on the preference of the care-seeker, as well as what can be afforded. The preferences of the person who needs the care should be taken into strong consideration, as well as their abilities and needs. If they have goals of college and a career, then placement in a boarding school style is the best choice. Many facilities only minimally address schooling while working through emotional and addiction issues. This may mean the young person will get behind and have a hard time with college admission and educational success.

Addiction

If the addiction is very strong, and emotional issues as well as dysfunctional family issues are present, a more intense hospital style of residential drug rehab may be what is needed. This allows issues of an emotional nature to be the foremost consideration. When working through strong emotional concerns, it is often not possible to address such things as education and physical fitness in very much detail. The emotions must be healed first.

Holistic Approaches

Some patients may benefit more from the physical rigors of the wilderness or outdoor treatment programs. Focusing on survival in the outdoors or wilderness, with its rigorous physical requirements, help some to focus on something other than their addiction. Intense physical activity releases brain chemicals that help the person feel good without their addictive substance.
